The Dart map is a painting by Anna Dunscombe of the River Dart gorge between Dartmeet and Buckfast, showing its flora, fauna, people and legends
At the centre of the map is a boy sitting by the river reading a book. This is Felix Murdin, who died in 2017 aged just 20 from SUDEP – Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.
With Anna’s kind permission Sophie Pierce, Felix’s mother, has printed the painting on prints, cards and tea towels, and all the profits go to a small charity called SUDEP Action which funds research into SUDEP and supports the bereaved.

Sophie is a writer based on Dartmoor. Her memoir, The Green Hill: Letters to a Son is about the sudden and unexpected death of her son Felix. The book explores how Sophie’s relationship with Dartmoor and the wider Devon landscape changed in the wake of this terrible loss, and in particular, the role the River Dart played in her mourning. Sophie is also the co-author, with Matt Newbury, of 5 wild swimming guides, including Wild Swimming Walks Dartmoor and South Devon.
